Halkia Wines

Halkia Winery
Halkia Winery is a family-owned estate established in the early 2000s by Anna Halkia in the renowned Nemea region of Greece. The winery is known for its commitment to organic viticulture and natural winemaking methods, producing wines that reflect the true essence of their terroir.
Anna Halkia is the oenologist and the woman-in-charge of Halkia Wines and was raised in Australia with her parents who had emigrated, before returning to Greece to start her family in Nemea.

Location and Terroir
Situated in the heart of Nemea on the Peloponnese peninsula, Halkia Winery benefits from a unique microclimate with cold winters and hot, dry summers. The vineyards are planted at elevations ranging from 280 to 330 meters above sea level, and the soils are a combination of limestone and clay, ideal for producing wines with character and depth.

Philosophy
Halkia Winery follows a philosophy of organic and natural winemaking, using certified organic farming practices. The winery embraces minimal intervention during fermentation, and wines are produced without fining or filtration. Only minimal sulfites are added at bottling to maintain the natural purity and expression of the grapes.

Notable Wines
Halkia Winery specializes in wines made from indigenous Greek grape varieties, particularly Agiorgitiko. Among its notable wines are:
Agiorgitiko Red: A classic red wine made entirely from Agiorgitiko, offering vibrant red and black fruit flavors and soft tannins.
Amber Assyrtiko: A distinctive orange wine crafted from Assyrtiko, with extended skin contact to create a rich amber hue and complex, layered flavors.

Sustainability
The winery is dedicated to sustainable practices, focusing on organic farming and natural winemaking techniques. By nurturing the soil and working with nature’s rhythms, Halkia Winery ensures that its wines truly represent the Nemea terroir, promoting long-term sustainability for both the environment and the winery.

Uniqueness
Halkia Winery stands out for its organic and natural approach to winemaking, combined with a deep commitment to indigenous Greek grape varieties. As a female-owned winery in a traditionally male-dominated industry, Anna Halkia brings a unique perspective to the winemaking process, producing wines that are authentic, expressive, and rooted in the region’s history.

Recognition
Despite being a boutique winery, Halkia Winery has gained significant recognition for its organic and natural wines, attracting a loyal following among natural wine enthusiasts. The winery has helped elevate the profile of Greek natural wines and continues to receive praise for its commitment to quality and authenticity.
